Marc Newton is an Adelaide-based contemporary mixed-media artist whose striking wall sculptures bridge the worlds of fine art and historic design. His unique practice involves meticulous plywood constructions built up in layers, which he transforms using bold acrylic paint, rich timber stains, and high-gloss liquid resin.Newton’s work is a visual dialogue between structural geometry and mid-century nostalgia. Heavily influenced by the clean lines of modernist architecture, the optimism of atomic-age design, and the faded glamour of vintage motel signage, he manipulates his materials to create layered relief pieces that play dynamically with shifting light. The organic warmth of exposed timber grain contrasts intentionally with saturated retro hues, all sealed beneath a glass-like resin finish that mimics the pristine aesthetic of the eras he looks back to. Currently the Head of Visual Arts at Scotch College Adelaide, Newton regularly showcases his structural, nostalgic pieces in prominent South Australian exhibitions and the annual SALA Festival.
